Music: 10 Guilty Pleasures Part I

What is a Guilty Pleasure?
I came up with this list with my family and friends - we had so much fun doing it that we came up with enough songs to make two lists! That's right, a part two is linked at the end of this Hub. The criteria we used when determining whether or not a song belonged on the list as a guilty pleasure was:
You are single and out for a drive. You have your car windows down and this song blaring on the radio. You pull up to a red light. You look over and see a cutie in the car next to you. Do you immediately turn the song down even though you absolutely love it? Yes? Guilty pleasure! So pull up a chair and stay for a while! Enjoy the videos of some of our guilty pleasures - in no particular order!
Funky Cold Medina is a hip hop song written by Young MC, Michael Ross, and Matt Dike. It was first performed by Tone Loc and released on March 18, 1989. A month later and it was in the third spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Funky Cold Medina is a fictional aphrodisiac.
The Final Countdown is a song by the band Europe that was released in 1986. It was written by Joey Tempest and has been touted by some as the band’s most popular and recognizable song. The Final Countdown ended up reaching the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 25 different countries.
The Eye of the Tiger is a song by the band Survivor. It was released on May 29, 1982 and was written at the request of Sylvester Stallone. Sly was unable to get permission to use Queen’s song ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ as the theme song for Rocky III. So he put in the request and got The Eye of the Tiger. The song was a hit, topping charts worldwide in 1982.
Escape later became known as Escape (The Pina Colada Song). It was performed by Rupert Holmes and was his highest charting hit. Escape was the last number one song of the 1970’s and the second number one song of the 1980’s. It is the only single to rise to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in two different decades. The lyrics were inspired by a want ad Rupert read while looking through the personals section.
I’m Too Sexy is a song by trio Right Said Fred. The single topped American charts in 1992. The lyrics are sung from the perspective of an egotistical fashion model.
Barbie Girl is a song by dance-pop group Aqua and it was released in 1997. The song was written by Claus Norreen and Soren Nystrom Rasted. Barbie Girl is Aqua’s biggest hit – topping charts worldwide. The lyrics, as we already know, are about Barbie and Ken sparking a lawsuit with the doll’s company, Mattel.
Kung Fu Fighting is a disco song that was released as a single in 1974. It was written, composed, and performed by Carl Douglas. The song sold eleven million records worldwide making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.
I'll admit it - the best part of adding this song was getting to listen to it the entire way through. I couldn't help dancing in my seat.
I'm steppin' tall ya'll
I'm spunky, I like my oatmeal lumpy
Come on! How could you NOT love a song with those lyrics? The Humpty Dance is a hip hop song from the 1990’s sung by Digital Underground. The single took spots on the pop charts, the R&B charts, and the Billboard Rap Singles chart.
Dancing Queen is a pop song recorded by ABBA and it was released August 1976. Dancing Queen, commonly regarded as one of the most successful singles of the 1970’s, was written by Benny Andersson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Stig Anderson. It reached number one on popular music charts in 13 countries.
Tubthumping is often referred to as “I Get Knocked Down” because this is the prominent line in the song. It is sung by the band Chumawamba and was released in August 1997. The song claimed top spots in Italy and the US Billboard Modern Tracks chart and peaked number 2 on the UK Singles Chart.

Ardie, you brought back some memories. I have always loved the Pina Colada song. Great Hub!
Definitely 'im too sexy' and 'barbie girl'. 'the final countdown' brings back memories of when my son was born. Ardie, thank you for this trip down memory lane and the realization that my guilty pleasures are common to man.
The Final Countdown...voted up..enjoyed the hub and it tickled me!! Thanks! Now it got me singing! :)
Voted up! Thanks for reminding me of one of my all time favorites from the old days - The Pina Colada Song. Gotta put it in My Favorites on YouTube.
I will argue that Dancing Queen is not a guilty pleasure. But I will definitely say I got my 90s faux-Irishmen on with "Tubthumping" as a kid. That and Barbie girl especially. However, there's no shame in my playlist game! Great job Ardie!
I remember Barbie Girl! Cool hub!:)
I love Kung Fu Fighting, but this is the first I heard I should feel guilty about it. Some of the others though, I do feel a little guilty about. Great hub!
Oh, how all these songs bring a sense of nostalgia. What a great list and I look forward to the next installment!
Hi, Ardie. Your list of songs is not exactly guilty pleasures to me, but you have included three of my favorites: Dancing Queen, Eye of the Tiger, and King Fu Fighting. Thank you.
I don't consider Abba a "guilty pleasure." To me, Phil Collins is a guilty pleasure. Great hub, thanks!
Hey Ardie, I enjoy too many of your songs. And if I was single(which I am) and there was a cutie in the car next to me while sitting at a light, I wouldn't turn it down. I would leave it at the volume I enjoy listening to it. Very funny hub! :) Voted up! :)
When I came here first there was but one vote and it was for Dancing Queen. So I began wondering... I'm not surprised it was YOU! lol
Funky Cold Medina got my vote! Followed by 7 more! Fun list of songs! Keep on Hubbin'! 5 more! Yay:)
Aw I was with Funky Cold Medina too! lol Very hilarious because I do love many of those songs and would sing them way too loud if they popped on the radio!
Super fun hub! Dancing Queeeeeeeennnnnnnn!
Great! I think I must be a lot more guilty than your family though ... LOL I love almost all music but I think I listened to "heavier" stuff most of the time. Loved this hub though!
What a great hub and here's to that up up and away.
Take care and enjoy your day.
Eddy.
Great list, the first 3 songs had me. Then you lost me a little but got me back with Kung Fu Fighting! I may have to go listen to it now.
I'm not sure why these would be guilty pleasures since some are classics. Voting this Up and Interesting.
Oh, these are some true guilty pleasures. I've actually been known to quote from Tubthumping... after all, I get knocked down, but I get up again, too! Voted up and awesome!
I loved this hub and there is so much truth how a song can change your demeanor in a minute. My husband will start down this pretend catwalk when that song comes on becoming this weird, sexy man... lol Rocky song OMG...let me be walking, this comes on, and I think I can run...then after it is over, I am hobbling back to the car listening to Memories by Barbara Streisand..hahaha
Ah, your music tastes both sound fantastic. I have a problem with Disco music at the moment, and I mean Disco from the 70s. My problem being that I can't get enough of it!
I believe my partner is quite concerned as we're getting married this year and I have ideas for the reception music. I shall have to refrain from wearing a white suit though I think.
up and shared, Ardie. I wouldn't roll my window up. if they don't like me for me, then who needs 'em?
Ardie...
Those who know me well...know...I'm all about the pleasure and I have certainly been known to shout out for the guilty pleasures too! You have a good list here and let me just say...I LOVE the Funky Cold Medina!
Voting up, sharing, and talking about this during dinner!
Thanks,
Thomas
I like all music, almost anyways. I listen to nearly everything, I think my kids hate that I know and even enjoy most of their music. Everything from Bach to Justin Bieber. It doesn't matter if its music I can probably enjoy listening to it. Thanks for writing this, I enjoyed reading it.
Hi Ardie... I agree... while I write I tune into stations all over the globe and listen to what is being played... right now it is Latin music... fingers are keeping beat... lol
Great hub
Hugs from Canada
I love Dancing Queen, and I feel no guilt!
Great list - voted up.
love this list! Escape is my #1 guilty pleasure song, followed by Dancing Queen. Funky Cold Medina took me right back to sophomore year at UW-Madison! I don't really turn them down though at red lights too much. just a little. I know they might crack up the other driver and put them in a good mood! Thank you for the fun listen, can't wait to check out part 2. you should keep these coming! Voted up and SHARED!
my #1 guilty pleasure song was guilty pleasure song. Cool songs! NOTHING LIKE MUSIC!!
LORD
LOL Ardie! I think I just attended someone's wedding and heard all of these songs!!! Love the hub...voted up!
Ardie-- I started my own list of guitar solos last night so this is quite a coincidence. Of course I had to check your list. I have to admit that ABBA is a guilty pleasure of mine, though Dancing Queen isn't my favorite. That's reserved for Chiquitita. Voted up and interesting.
I vote this hub as 'awesome'! Mine (shhhh) is Barbie Girl!! Hehe so many great songs here though :)

Love it, Ardie. I chose Dancing Queen; that makes me want to belt it out. Love 'em all, except not too familiar with Kung fu fighting. Barbie Girl was definitely a guilty pleasure. haha. Great hub, girl!
